Our town has grown around the River Sid. Originally a bustling fishing port in the Middle Ages, it now relies on tourism as its main income.
Our homes stretch to the Sidmouth Forest and the wooded slopes of Peak Hill, where a car park adjoins Mutters Moor in the West: In the East, our homes are surrounded by mature beech woods on the incline of Salcombe Hill. Both these beauty spots overlook Lyme Bay. The sides of our valley team with wildlife including Roe and Sika deer, birds, mammals and wild plants which are too numerous to list, but some of them are included in the thumbnails on each page of our website.

On the floor of the valley and reaching from the centre of the town along the Sid to Sidford, are the Byes. Mature parkland and wild fields which are cherished and nurtured by sidmouth's inhabitants.
The Byes is a useful link between Sidford and the town centre for walkers and cyclists who wish to avoid the traffic on the main roads. They have separate paths for most of the way only sharing at present through the most sensitive parts. The fields that comprise Margaret's Meadow which includes Gilcrist field are accessed from this path.
