The Sidmouth Herald chose the planting of two locally bred fruit trees by the pupils of St Nicholas Junior School to be the first video report placed on their website. Sidmouth in Bloom donated a Woolbrook Pippin & a Woolbrook Russet which were originally bred in 1903 by Stevens & Sons at Woolbrook Nursery. The Nursery has long gone but the trees which were planted in the school grounds by Jerome Blackburn & Katherine Morton of year 5 are in the general area of their original breeding. Most of the towns's schools work with us in encouraging an interest in growing food plants as well as flowers and trees.

Funding.

Funding is always a challenge and this year we and the whole of East Devon faced massive cuts in funding for its floral funding, but it was felt to be too important and has been left alone for now. (see press cutting in the slideshow)

We in Sidmouth in Bloom fund the displays in the Sea World and many troughs and displays throughout the town. To do this we have to raise £10,000 a year and the town comes up trumps each year. People and businesses sponsor individual troughs and pots as well as making donations and supporting our fundraising events.

Besides funds, we are always on the look out for people to be able to help us at different times throughout the year. We try to look after the areas of the town that the Council can't reach. This takes the form of tidying and sometimes weeding and planting. These are things that children can do with their parents. Grandparents are also welcomed as every age group has its own skills.
