In the 19th century the Connaught Gardens as they are now known, were part of a private house's gardens. In 1930 they came under public ownership and the structure of the gardens remains much as it was then. There are many different areas divided by the original walls and all have different characters and planting. The central lawn has a bandstand which is used by the town band for regular concerts.

Visitors to the town come back year after year to see the garden displays. It is important to be aware of climate change and the need to grow more sustainable plants in the planting scheme. It is also important to our town's economy to ensure that the changes are not so great as to drive away our visitors. So it is important to get the balance of summer bedding and sustainable planting right, whilst introducing more sustainable planting.
It is in one of the rooms in the Connaught Gardens that the children from the town's schools have areas which they plant up having first designed and costed their creations during lessons.Cick here to see Our Children.
